Not Back to School Camp

Posting this next week is going to be sporadic at best (although I do hope to put up my  next “Deconstructing Unschooling” video over the weekend) due mostly to the fact that on Friday I drive Maya to Not Back to School Camp.

It’s kind of a big deal; she’s never been away from home for more than a night or two, and then she was in the company of friends.   No one she knows will be at the camp.   The camp is pretty rustic, and Maya’s  idea of rustic is usually a hotel without a pool.   But when she first said she wanted to go we read the  camp handbook and went through the website and her decision stood.

So Friday is the day.

The drive there will be just me and her.  It’s about 5 hours from the city, and since drop off time is late afternoon I am taking the opportunity to spend a night on my own in a local hotel.   The last time I did that I was on a cross country trip and was 25 years old.

Let’s just say it was a while ago…

Next week is going to be party, party, party as far as Ben is concerned.  At least, that’s what he thinks right now.  An entire WEEK with no sister in the house?  Are you kidding me?   So we’ve got some things planned, not the least of which is the arrival of my Mom next Thursday and a 2 day trip with just the three of us prior to picking Maya up from camp the following weekend.

That said, I’m pretty sure he will miss her by week’s end.

It will be weird with only one kid in the house.   Especially since when Maya is here there are often one or two extra girls here with her.  (Which is another reason Ben is so looking forward to this next week.)

Even if she doesn’t love the camp, it’s going to be a great experience.  No wifi.  No phone service.  Cabins and outhouses and vegetarian eating for a week!

I’m sure there will be stories to tell.

My sister and I went for years, and loved it (and this year we’ll both be at the retreat session)! I hope she has a terrific time. :)

Thanks Idzie! The retreat starts after the regular camp, yes? If there was any overlap it would be great to meet you. I’ll be there on pick up day…

She’s going to kick total ass. Watch out; it will likely become a recurring investment.
